ABOUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Carpentersville Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical services to the residents of the Village, as well as the surrounding Carpentersville and Countryside Fire Protection District. The department provides several other services, which include but are not limited to fire prevention, fire investigation, public education, specialized rescue that includes: confined space, trench rescue, high angle, hazardous materials, water and ice rescue, and building collapse.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic with the Carpentersville Fire Department must meet the following criteria:
RESIDENCE
Applicants for examination must be citizens of the United States.
AGE
Applicants must be a minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 35 years at the time of application and at such time as the final eligibility list is posted, as well as when the list is executed at the time of appointment, unless otherwise exempt by state statute.
EDUCATION
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATION
Applicants must be Illinois Certified Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) due at the time of appointment.
Applicants must have a valid and current Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) or National Registry EMT- Basic License at time of application deadline (EMT-Paramedic due at time of appointment).
Applicants must have current and valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb Certification dated within one year prior to the date of the written exam.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a class B Non CDL.
OTHER
Applicants must have no felony convictions, and must abide by the requirements set forth by the Board of the Fire and Police Commissioners.
APPLICATION PROCESS
When applications for full-time employment are being accepted, applicants must complete and submit the following:
- Application
- Copy of High School Diploma or GED
- Copy of Valid Driver’s License
- Copy of Birth Record or other Proof of Citizenship
- Copy of Firefighter Certification (if applicable), if not provided a copy will be required at time of hire.
- Copy of IDPH EMT-Paramedic Certification (if applicable), if not provided a copy will be required at time of hire.

TESTING
Candidates must attend a written examination and sign-in with a photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, military ID). The testing location is the Carpentersville Public Works Building, located at 1075 Tamarac Drive in Carpentersville.

The Board will select a number of the highest-rated applicants in descending order after completion of the orientation, physical performance examination (if required) and written examination to participate in the oral examination phase of testing. It shall be left to the Board’s discretion to determine the number of applicants invited to participate in the oral examinations.
