CPD Sergeant Jorge Gonzalez Graduates From Northwestern University's Center For Public Safety

January 25, 2017 - The Carpentersville Police Department is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Sergeant Jorge Gonzalez from the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC). Sergeant Gonzalez was one of 36 students in SPSC Class 407 to successfully complete the 10-week program held in Crystal Lake from September 2016 through January 2017. This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has produced thousands of national and international graduates.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I was given to participate in this highly recognized and respected program,” said Sergeant Gonzalez. “Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command has given me an advanced perspective on how to be an effective leader and civil servant.”

The SPSC program provides upper-level college instruction, covering topics such as Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation; all necessary courses to become a successful leader for the Carpentersville Police Department.

Each student is academically challenged through written examinations, projects, presentations and quizzes, in addition to a staff study paper that are all required parts of the curriculum. Upon successful completion, students may be awarded a total of 6 units of undergraduate credit from Northwestern University.

“Our Police Department sends each of its sergeants to this program, we have seen that this program helps develop a strong team of first level supervisors to serve both our community and Police Department”, Chief Michael J. Kilbourne.

The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development.

The Carpentersville Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Sergeant Gonzalez’s attendance at the School of Police Staff and Command.

“My mission is to take the knowledge obtained and use it to give back to the community of Carpentersville,” Sergeant Gonzalez said. “Thank you to Police Department Command Staff for allowing me to take time away from my post in order to complete this training.”

Many of the program’s graduates secure a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies.
